Gabor Maté’s Trauma-Informed Approach to Healing

Reconnecting With the Authentic Self Through Trauma Work

At Inner Transformation Therapy, we deeply resonate with the trauma-related insights of Dr. Gabor Maté—an internationally recognized expert in trauma, addiction, and the mind-body connection. His teachings are a foundational influence in how we support clients’ healing from emotional wounds, reconnecting with their authentic self, and transforming their relationship with pain.

“Trauma is not what happens to us, but what we hold inside in the absence of an empathetic witness.”

Gabor Maté

What Is Trauma According to Gabor Maté?

Gabor Maté redefines trauma in a way that shifts how we approach emotional healing. Trauma is not just the external event that harmed us, but the emotional wound we carry because we weren’t supported or safe enough to feel, express, or process it.

In short, trauma is a loss of connection to ourselves, our bodies, and our emotions.

According to Maté, many of us learned to disconnect from our true selves in order to survive. We numbed the pain, adapted our behavior to gain approval, or suppressed emotions to avoid rejection or abandonment. These strategies helped us cope—but they can also keep us stuck as adults.

Core Concepts in Gabor Maté’s Trauma Work

  • Trauma = Unhealed Wounding
Trauma is a wound, not a flaw or weakness. Healing is not about reliving the trauma, but about reconnecting to the parts of ourselves that were lost in the process.
  • We Lose Connection With Our Authentic Self
In childhood, we may have traded authenticity for attachment, learning to suppress emotions, stay quiet, or ignore our inner signals to stay safe or loved.
  • Mind-Body Unity Matters
Western medicine often separates the mind and body, but Maté emphasizes that emotional pain creates physical stress, contributing to inflammation, illness, and chronic disease. Healing requires reconnecting the two.
  • Trauma Is Multigenerational
The pain we carry often did not start with us. Trauma can be passed down through behaviors, beliefs, emotional absence, and even biology. Breaking the cycle begins with conscious awareness.
